Although it was believed that Sony made the decision to increase the price in the aftermath of the singer's death, the label insisted that it was a mistake made by an employee.

AceShowbiz - Sony has apologized for bumping up the price of Whitney Houston's records in the United Kingdom in the wake of her death. Her hit compilations, including "Greatest Hits", was selling way above their normal price on Sunday, February 12, a day after Whitney's body was discovered in her Beverly Hilton hotel bathroom.

"Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the U.K. iTunes store on Sunday," said a statement issued by Sony. "When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologize for any offense caused." Two executives at Sony Music claimed the price increase was the result of an error by a Sony employee in Britain, insisting that the company gave no such order.

The late singer's "Greatest Hits" was up 25 percent, from $12.50 to $15.67, while the price of "Ultimate Collection" hiked as high as 60 percent, from $7.85 to about $12.50. Many thought the label was cashing in on Whitney's death. According to The Guardian, the change of price was the result of the label's decision.

Nevertheless, the albums are indeed hot items in music stores. Seven of her records are sitting in Amazon U.K.'s top 10 albums.
