M.I.A. Splits From Longtime Billionaire Fiance Amid Super Bowl Controversy
Only a few days after turning heads with her controversial Super Bowl performance, M.I.A. emerged with another surprising news related to her romance life. New York Daily News broke the news that the 36-year-old raptress has called it quits with her long-time billionaire fiance, Benjamin Bronfman, who is also the father of her 3-year-old baby boy.
The exact reason behind M.I.A's split is still unclear. Her representative has yet to make any statement on the swirling reports. However, it was said that Bronfman has already moved on from the songstress. He was spotted on a date with a beautiful woman last week at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.
After the break-up, the "Paper Planes" hitmaker has reportedly been spending most of her time in her London hometown. Her ex-fiance, meanwhile, lives with their son Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman in New York. An insider said that the baby boy was taken care by Bronfman's philanthropist, Sherry. Another source said that the raptress "sometimes goes six weeks without seeing" her son.
M.I.A. met Bronfman, who is the founder of Green Owl record label, when she moved in to New York last 2006. Shortly before their son was born in 2009, the couple lived together in a house at the exclusive Brentwood section in Los Angeles. Back in 2010, the "Bad Girls" singer admitted that she's been thinking about marrying her fiance after settling her immigration issues with the U.S.
The rapper previously had trouble in entering the States because of a controversial statement she made about conflicts in her parents' native Sri Lanka. She told Fader magazine that she refused to get her green card by marrying Bronfman as saying, "That's what they want me to do, but I'm not going to lose my integrity for that s***. I actually want a nice wedding. I'm not going to blow that."
The break-up report aside, M.I.A. has recently sparked a headline-grabbing news as she flipped the bird at NBC camera during her Super Bowl halftime performance with Madonna an Nicki Minaj on Sunday, February 5. The action has forced both NFL and NBC to issue an apology afterward.
"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," said an NBC publicist. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture, and we apologize to our viewers." On the other hand, representatives for both M.I.A. and Madonna haven't made any statement regarding the incident.
