AceShowbiz - 20th Century Fox's found footage film "Chronicle" lands on the top of North American box office on the Super Bowl weekend. The high school superpower movie collects a solid $22 million in its opening week, defeating its rival newcomer, Daniel Radcliffe's horror pic "The Woman in Black".
Receiving a "B" CinemaScore, the Josh Trank-directed sci-fi attracts to mostly younger moviegoers, with 61|percent| of the ticket buyers are under the age of 25. Of the good box office result, Fox executive vice president of distribution Chris Aronson says, "This is a fantastic result for a movie that was designed by and made for that younger deographic that has been largely missing from theaters."
Trailing close behind "Chronicle" on the runner-up spot is "Woman in Black" with $20.8 million in its debut week. The thriller receives a "B-" CinemaScore and appeals to many of "Harry Potter" fans who would like to see Radcliffe in this movie. Female audience make up 59|percent| of the ticket buyers, who mostly consist of younger moviegoers.
Steven Friedlander, CBS Films president of domestic distribution, gushes, "You've got one of the biggest and hardest-working actors in a well-made, scary movie, with an innovative marketing campaign."
Last week's champion "The Grey" falls to the third place this weekend. The survival thriller starring Liam Neeson rakes in $9.3 million. Despite the prediction that the film will drop more than 70|percent| on the Super Bowl weekend, it only falls 52|percent| from last week, collecting a total domestic cume of $34.7 million after two weeks playing in the U.S. theaters.
Another new release this week is Drew Barrymore's whale movie, "Big Miracle". Being made on a $40 million budget, the family movie grosses only $7.7 in its opening week. The movie appeals to family audience and receives a "A-" CinemaScore.
Rounding up the top five is "Underworld: Awakening". The Kate Beckinsale-starring vampire war thriller bags $5.5 million on this Super Bowl weekend. After three weeks rolling in cinemas, the movie collects a total domestic cume of $54.3 million.
