Movie

The 'Godfather' actor will take on the role as Gru's lead enemy in the sequel to animated hit 'Despicable Me', replacing the previously tapped actor Javier Bardem.

AceShowbiz - Al Pacino is set to make his animated film debut as he was slated to replace Javier Bardem in "Despicable Me 2". Deadline reported that the veteran actor, who is famous for playing a mobster in several iconic movies, has been cast to voice a supervillain in the Universal Pictures animation.

Details of Pacino's role are still kept secret, but his character will be the archenemy of Gru. While Bardem was originally tapped to voice evil genius El Macho, it has been rumored that Pacino could tackle a different villainous character which is adjusted to his personality.

The Michael Corleone of 1972's iconic mafia movie "The Godfather" is set to join a voice cast ensemble that includes such stars as Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove and Russell Brand. The four actors will reprise their roles as Gru, Miss Hattie, Margo and Dr. Nefario respectively.

"Despicable Me", which was released in July 2010, has succesfully grossed a massive $251,5 million domestically and $543 worldwide, despite the fact that it was only produced on a $69 million budget. The sequel, meanwhile, will bring back director duo Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, as well as screenwriters Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul.

As for Pacino, the 71-year-old Oscar winner was last seen starring as himself in Adam Sandler's comedy "Jack and Jill". His next movie will be another mob film, "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father", which is a John Gotti biopic starring Ben Foster, John Travolta, Lindsay Lohan and Kelly Preston.
