The band's lead singer Justin Vernon reveals they rejected the offer to perform at the awards show because they were told that they couldn't play their own music.

AceShowbiz - While other artists might be eager to perform at Grammy Awards, the guys from Bon Iver were quite the opposite. A week shy of the live telecast, it's revealed that they had turned down the offer to sing at the prestigious event. In an interview with Billboard, they explained the situation which forced them to say no.

"We wanted to play our music, but were told that we couldn't play. We had to do a collaboration with someone else," frontman Justin Vernon opened up. "We kind of said 'f**k you' a little bit, and they sort of acted like they wanted us to play, but I don't think they wanted us to play."

"We just felt like it was such a large stage -- we're getting nominated for this record that we made. Me and Brian [Joseph] and a bunch of our fucking friends and we were given accolades for it, and all of a sudden we were being asked to play music that had nothing to do with that."

When asked whom they were asked to collaborate with, he said, "Awesome people. People that I would love to play a song with." He added, "But you know what? F**kin' rock n' roll should not be decided by people that have that job. Rock n' roll should be the f**king people with guitars around their backs."

Bon Iver receive four nominations at the upcoming 54th annual Grammy Awards. They are vying for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist. To win the last mentioned category, they have to beat The Band Perry, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and Skrillex.

Winners will be announced on February 12 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Taylor Swift will perform along with Adele, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars, Blake Shelton, The Band Perry, and Jason Aldean.

LL Cool J is tapped to host the event. Drake, Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley, meanwhile, will serve as presenters along with the likes of Jack Black, Stacy Ferguson aka Fergie, Ringo Starr and Questlove.
