The new comedy series will follow Wilson's character Dwight Schrute as he returns home to his family's beet farm as well as bed and breakfast.

AceShowbiz - Dwight Schrute will retreat to his home in a new comedy series. It has just been reported that NBC is developing "The Office" spin-off which will focus on the life of Rainn Wilson's character outside of Dunder Mifflin as he returns to his family's beet farm and bed & breakfast.

A source close to "The Office" tells Deadline that the family comedy "will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together." No deals have been sealed, but a backdoor pilot is planned to air later this season for a projected 2013 premiere.

"Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight's life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B," the source further reveals. "A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it's been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors."

Wilson and Lieberstein will serve as executive producers alongside "The Office" executive producers Ben Silverman and Howard Klein. Should NBC proceed with the spin-off and "The Office" get a ninth season, Wilson will return to the veteran show in the fall before moving onto the new show in midseason.

The Schrute Farms has been featured several times on "The Office", including when Jim and Pam visited Dwight there. It is unclear if Dwight's cousin Mose, who has appeared on the comedy series, will become a part of the spin-off.
