The 'Lincoln' director is reportedly near to sign a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures to helm the biblical epic, which is said to be planned as a 'real warrior story.'

AceShowbiz - Steven Spielberg is reportedly one step closer to seal a deal to direct "Gods and Kings", a biblical epic based on the Moses story. The A-list filmmaker has been eyed to helm the film project for Warner Bros. Pictures since September 2011. However, the negotiations didn't intensify until recently. The studio reportedly aims to kick off the production sometime in March or April 2013.

An insider told Deadline that the "War Horse" helmer sees the film project as "a movie like a 'Braveheart'-ish version of the Moses story." The plot will take place from when the prophet was "coming down the river, being adopted, leaving his home, forming an army, and getting the Ten Commandments." Though it will include the iconic Red Sea parting scene, it is said that the film will not be done in 3D.

Furthermore, the insider said that "Gods and Kings" will not be a remake of 1956's "The Ten Commandments". Instead, Warners wants Spielberg to direct it with "the gritty of 'Saving Private Ryan'." The insider said, "There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story."

Based on the Book of Exodus and other stories from the Old Testament, "Gods and Kings" is written by "Paradise Lost" scribe Stuart Hazeldine and "Green Lantern" screenwriter Michael Green. Serving as the producers are Dan Lin and Matti Lesham.

Spielberg has just wrapped the production of "Lincoln" and is currently committing to work on "Robopocalypse". He was just snubbed for a Best Director nod at the 2012 Academy Awards for his work on "War Horse". The drama, however, received a nomination for Best Picture.
