The 'Alice in Wonderland' actress joins Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in giving a musical tribute to the 'Iron Lady' star at the 34th annual event, and ends up doing a split.

AceShowbiz - Meryl Streep had a reason to be overwhelmed at the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. Chosen as one of the honorees, the 62-year-old movie beauty was feted with a musical performance by her co-stars in "The Devil Wears Prada", Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Hathaway showed off her fine vocal with a rendition of "She's Me Pal" dedicated to Streep, before she ended up doing a split on the stage in her beautiful gown. Blunt praised the "Mamma Mia!" actress by recalling her time working with the two-time Oscar winner.

"In every scene, she's actually doing at least two jobs," Blunt stated. "First, her own character, who is always so complete, so natural, you forget that somewhere in there is Meryl Streep. Then the second is, stabilizing the other actor who is having a nervous breakdown because they're in a scene with Meryl Streep."

Robert De Niro, who also introduced Streep, made a joke about his "Falling in Love" co-star's two Golden Globe nominations in 2010. "One factor keeping Meryl's average is down is that she has to compete with Meryl Streep, including last year when her performance in 'Julie & Julia' beat out her performance in 'It's Complicated'," he said before adding, "Meryl was so gracious in losing."

Streep, who was dressed in a black gown that night, admitted she was in awe of the accolades from her fellow actors. "Look where we are, look who's here," the Margaret Thatcher depicter in "The Iron Lady" told The Associated Press. "It's overwhelming. I feel very proud."

The other artists being recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors were Neil Diamond, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist/composer Sonny Rollins, and singer/Tony winner Barbara Cook. Among those taking the stage to introduce the honorees were John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick, Bill Cosby and the "Sesame Street" puppet Elmo.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were also present at the event, which was held on Sunday, December 4 in Washington, D.C. The show is aired this Tuesday, December 27 on CBS.
