'X Factor' Semifinal Performance Recap: Simon Cowell Shows No Love to Marcus
After Rachel Crow's shocking elimination, "The X Factor (US)" moves on with its remaining four contestants on the semifinal round. Before the battle began on Wednesday, December 14, the show had already presented drama as Nicole Scherzinger got the boos from audience when she entered the stage.
Refusing to let haters make her down, Nicole said the boos only made her stronger. She later gave a shout out to last week's ouster, "Rachel, I have nothing but love for her," before adding, "and you know what? God is good, and I got nothing but love and light tonight! And it's rock 'n' roll time, and it's about these contestants!"
The finalists, Marcus Canty, Chris Rene, Melanie Amaro and Josh Krajcik, took the stage with each of them delivering two songs. One was the song picked by fans in the Pepsi Challenge, while the other was chosen by their respective mentor.
Marcus started first, performing Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love to You". Paula Abdul thought he gave "150 percent" in it, but Simon Cowell blamed L.A. Reid for "very distracting, very corny" staging. He was not more generous when commenting Marcus' second performance of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper", calling it "horrific" and "grotesque."
When Chris did "Fly" by Sugar Ray, Simon gave a more favorable review by saying, "It was a good performance," but added, "It wasn't a mega vocal." L.A. disagreed with his fellow judge since he thought Chris looked "like a mega-star." Chris' second song was Alicia Keys' "No One". Taking a big risk, he got praises from the judges with Simon saying Chris "just delivered, big-time."
The only female contestant left on the show, Melanie got Mariah Carey's "Hero" from viewers' choice. L.A. noted that he didn't hear her "usual passion" at the beginning, but Simon called her performance "bloody fantastic." She once again got rave reviews with her rendition of "Feelin' Good". L.A. gushed, "You killed it, girl," while Paula chimed in, "I feel you, and it feels good!"
Josh took the last turn in both rounds, singing "Come Together" for the first performance which earned positive feedbacks. The judges, however, were divided when commenting his second performance "Hallelujah". L.A. said it "lacked excitement," but Simon and Paula were in favor of the 30-year-old father with the British producer declaring, "I think that song has put you into the final next week."
One Thursday result show, one of these four contestants will be sent home while the rest will go to the finals.
