The former 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit' actor will play 'an ancient, powerful vampire' on the HBO drama series.

AceShowbiz - Christopher Meloni is officially a new series regular on "True Blood". Confirming previous reports that the Elliot Stabler of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was in talks to join the cast of the hit vampire-themed series, executive producer Alan Ball has told TVLine that the 50-year-old actor will play "an ancient, powerful vampire who holds the fate of Bill and Eric in his hands."

The negotiations between Meloni and HBO started weeks ago. This role marks his return to the cable network after he played bisexual criminal Chris Keller on prison drama "Oz", which ran from 1998 to 2003.

Prior to casting Meloni, "True Blood" has added British actress Lucy Griffiths to the cast line-up. She lands another regular role as Nora, who is strongly related to Eric since she was also created by Godric. This female vampire is described as being beautiful, intelligent, intimidating and a very good liar.

The fifth season of "True Blood" is expected to premiere in summer 2012. Denis O'Hare has been confirmed to reprise his role as Russell Edgington, the vampire King of Mississippi.
