Though claiming the champion title, the star-studded romantic comedy movie earns only $13 million, far below the expected $20 million on its debut weekend.

"" dethrones "" on the North American box office in its debut week. Though so, the star-studded romantic comedy only grosses $13 million, marking the lowest opening of 2011. The result is rather unimpressive since the Garry Marshall-directed film, which receives a "B+" CinemaScore, was expected to grab at least $20 million on its first weekend.

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution, explained, "The box office was just in really bad shape. While we had the No. 1 movie, we were No. 1 in a very soft market." He continued, "There weren't enough moviegoers and the only thing you can hope for is that the big Chirstmas films, which start to kick in next weekend, help to pick up the pace."

Landing on the second spot is R-rated comedy "", which rakes in $9.8 million on its opening weekend. Unlike "New Year's Eve" which receives a disappointing result, the domestic gross for the -starring movie, which cost less than $25 million to produce, is in line with its pre-weekend prediction.

"We opened in line with our pre-release expectations, and we'll continue to play as the college crowd finishes up finals," 20th Century Fox's senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said of the comedy which receives a "C-" CinemaScore.

"Breaking Dawn I", meanwhile, falls to the third place after three weeks reigning the chart. Dropping 52% from last week, the vampire movie collects $7.8 million for a total domestic cume of $259.6 million after four weeks playing in theaters. The film runs 3% behind its predecessor, 2009's "", which earned $267.3 million in the same end-of-year period.

On the fourth place, there is "" which rakes in $6.9 million, declining 36% from last week. After three weeks playing in cinemas, the fan-favorite puppet movie collects a total domestic cume of $65.2 million. "" rounds up the top five with $6.5 million, dropping 11% from last week. The animated film earns a total cume of $33.5.
