AceShowbiz - The nominations for the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards have been announced on Tuesday, November 29. In the Best Male Lead category, Ryan Gosling earned a nomination through his role as Hollywood stunt driver in "Drive". Meanwhile, in the Best Female Lead category, Michelle Williams is being nominated for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn".
Gosling is set to go head-to-head against the likes of Woody Harrelson ("Rampart), Michael Shannon ("Take Shelter"), Demian Bichir ("A Better Life") and Jean Dujardinis ("The Artist"). As for Williams, the 31-year-old actress will have to compete against other strong contenders, such as Lauren Ambrose ("Think of Me"), Rachael Harris ("Natural Selection"), Adepero Oduye ("Pariah") and Elizabeth Olsen ("Martha Marcy May Marlene").
In the meantime, "Take Shelter and "The Artist" are among the films which received the most nominations. The two will have to compete against "50/50", "Beginners", "Drive" and "The Descendants" for the Best Feature gong. In addition to the coveted kudo, both films have their director, Michel Hazanavicius and Jeff Nichols, vying for the Best Director title.
The nominees of the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were picked by the Film Independent, which members include acclaimed filmmakers and movie fans. Movies that can be nominated are those which cost less than $20 million to produce and have independent-cinema criteria, including uniqueness of vision and original subject matter.
The winners will be announced during an afternoon ceremony on February 25, 2012, a day before the 2012 Academy Awards takes place. The ceremony itself will air later that night on Independent Film Channel (IFC).
