Greek Epic 'Immortals' Opens at No. 1 on Box Office

The Henry Cavill-starring war movie rules the chart on its debut weekend, beating Adam Sandler's 'Jack and Jill' as well as Leonardo DiCaprio's 'J. Edgar'.

AceShowbiz - Greek myth film, "Immortals", claims the champion title on North American box office in its opening week. The Tarsem Singh-directed epic successfully tops the chart with $32.2 million. Kyle Davies, Relativity Media president of distribution says, "The picture exceeded expectations, and there's no other action-adventure until you get to Christmas, which bodes well."

Receiving a "B" CinemaScore, the R-rated movie, which costs $75 million to produce, appeals to 60|percent| male moviegoers, with 75|percent| of them under the age of 35. "Action fans have been staying away, and clearly this movie got those fans," Davies explains.

Another new release this week, "Jack and Jill", lands on the second spot. Grossing $25 million, the Adam Sandler-starring comedy movie attracts 53|percent| family audience. "I think we're in good shape," claims Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer. "No one gets better multiples than Adam Sandler."

After dominating the chart for two weeks in a row, "Puss in Boots" falls to the third place this week. The "Shrek" spin-off collects $24.7 million, dropping 3|percent| from last week. The Chris Miller-directed animated movie has earned a total domestic cume of $103 million after three weeks playing in U.S. theaters.

"Tower Heist", meanwhile, secures the fourth place this week with an $12.7 million. The comedy film, which stars Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Casey Affleck, has collected a total domestic cume of $43.9 million after ten days playing in cinemas across the U.S.

Another newcomer that rounds up the top five this week is "J. Edgar". The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring biopic grosses $11.2 million in its debut week. Achieving a "B" CinemaScore, the Clint Eastwood movie appeals to mostly adult viewers with 94|percent| of them over the age of 25.
