Brett Ratner Admits His Gay Slur Is a Dumb Way of Expressing Himself
Monday, November 7 turned out to be a day of apology for Brett Ratner. After apologizing on "The Howard Stern Show" for lying about having sex with actress Olivia Munn, the director issued a statement saying he is sorry for slipping out a gay slur during the Q&A session at the Friday, November 4 screening of "Tower Heist".
"I apologize for any offense my remarks caused," the 42-year-old told The Wrap. "It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words."
Ratner released the statement after the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation demanded an apology for his insensitive comment during the Q&A. The filmmaker was at the time responded to the question what rehearsals were like for his new action comedy by saying, "Rehearsal? What's that? Rehearsal's for f**s."
Though calling the remarks made by Ratner were "dumb and insensitive", Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak won't remove him from his Oscar-producing position. He told Deadline, "He knew it was wrong and he issued that response as quickly as any human being ever has. The bottom line is, this won't and can't happen again. It will not happen again. He apologized and we will move forward."
"I've known this man for a very long time. He has many friends who are members of the gay and lesbian community. The apology he gave I truly believe comes from his heart. If I didn't believe it, I would do something about it. This is about integrity and honoring the Academy Awards, but we all make mistakes and I believe he didn't mean it."
As for his other apology, Ratner confessed during a phone interview on "The Howard Stern Show" that he made up the story about sleeping with the former co-host of G4's "Attack of the Show". He explained, "The girl's a friend of mine. I said I banged her three times, which wasn't true. She's hot! She's actually a talented actress. The problem is I made her look like she's a w***e."
Ratner made the false claim on "Attack of the Show" in early November when saying he is actually the director from Munn's book, "Suck It, Wonder Woman!: The Misadventures of a Hollywood Geek". He at the time said, "I used to date Olivia Munn, I'll be honest with everybody here. But when she was 'Lisa,' that was the problem. She wasn't Asian back then."
She was hanging out on my set of 'After the Sunset', I banged her a few times ... but I forgot her," he continued. "Because she changed her name, I didn't know it was the same person, and so when she came and auditioned with me for a TV show, I forgot her, she got pissed off. And she made up all these stories about me eating shrimp and masturbating in my trailer. And she talked about my shortcomings."
