Staying atop the chart for the second week in a row, the 'Shrek' spin-off knocks down two newcomers, 'Tower Heist' and 'A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas'.

AceShowbiz - "Puss in Boots" secures the champion title on North American box office for two weeks in a row. The animated movie collects $33 million, dropping only 3|percent| from last week. It is the smallest drop ever for a non-holiday movie. Anne Globe, DreamWorks Animation's head of worldwide marketing and consumer products, says of the achievement, "To have a hold at this level is extraordinary."
Meanwhile, "Tower Heist" fails to claim the number one spot in its opening week. Landing on the second place, the Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy-starring comedy earns $24 million, which is below Universal Pictures' expectation for the film to gross $30 million on its debut weekend.
Nikki Rocoo, Universal president of domestic distribution explains that the disappointing result for "Tower Heist" is because of the overall low marketplace. "The film was impacted by what I believe is a moviegoing malaise. I think 'Tower Heist' is a terrific film that was well marketed, and audiences enjoyed their experience, based on exit polls," so he says.
Another newcomer this week, "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas", opens on the third place with $12.9 million. Though receiving a "B" CinemaScore, the film grosses below Warner Bros. Pictures' expectation of $18 million. The R-rated comedy appeals to 62|percent| male moviegoers, with 73|percent| of them under the age of 35.
"Paranormal Activity 3" drops to number four on its third weekend. Dropping 53|percent| from last week, the horror movie adds $8.3 million for a total domestic cume of $95.3 million. Rounding up the top five is futuristic action film "In Time" with $7.4 million. The Justin Timberlake-starring film grosses a total domestic cume of $24.2 million after two weeks playing in U.S. theaters.
