Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter Eyed to Star in 'Akira'

The Sirius Black and the Bellatrix Lestrange of the 'Harry Potter' film franchise have been offered to play The Colonel and Lady Miyako respectively in the anime-adapted movie project.

AceShowbiz - As soon as it gets a greenlight from Warner Bros. Pictures, "Akira" moves forward with its casting. After it was reported that Garrett Hedlund is the front-runner to play protagonist Kaneda, it is now said that Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter are also offered roles in the anime-adapted movie.

Twitch reports that Gary has been eyed to tackle the role of The Colonel, while Helena has been considered to play Lady Miyako. The Colonel is described as the head of secret government project who conducts a research on psychic test subjects. Meanwhile, Lady Miyako is a priestess who is also a major ally of Kaneda and his best friend Kei.

To be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, "Akira" centers on Kaneda, a leader of motorcycle gang known as "The Capsules". He must save his best friend, who has a destructive psychokinetic abilities, from being a medical experiments of the government. The story is based on Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 anime of the same title.

Leonardo DiCaprio serves as the producer along with Jennifer Davidsson Killoran and Andrew Lazar. Meanwhile, Steve Kloves, who wrote the scripts for the "Harry Potter" film franchise, will serve as the screenwriter for the upcoming cyberpunk sci-fi project.
