AceShowbiz - Martin Scorsese and William Monahan will join forces once again. Years after working together on 2006's "The Departed", the filmmaker duo are hired to bring a remake of "The Gambler" to the big screen. The former is being set to direct, while the latter is hired to pen the script.

Scorsese and Monahan will develop the movie for Paramount Pictures with Monahan having a double duty as producer. The Hollywood Reporter additionally reported that both of them have their eyes on their "Departed" star Leonardo DiCaprio for the lead role. It is noted, however, that no deal is in place for the actor.

A short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, "The Gambler" was originally adapted into a movie in 1974 and starred by James Caan. It centers on a New York English professor who inspires his students while suffering from a secret gambling addiction. The affliction causes him to extort money from his mother and convince one of his students to shave points in a basketball game.

Scorsese himself has been busy with some other projects. The 68-year-old filmmaker will have his first family film, "Hugo", being released in time for Thanksgiving, and is prepping for an adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel, "Silence". He is also attached to work on an adaptation of the Jordan Belfort memoir, "The Wolf of Wall Street".
