'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Still Rules Box Office, Holding Off 'The Help'

The sci-fi movie becomes the third film to reign the chart for more than a week this summer, while the newcomer lands at the second place with more than what analysts predicted.

"" still dominated the North American box office in its second week. The prequel of the 1968 sci-fi film, however, dropped around 50% from last week with $27.8 million from domestic ticket sales.

Nonetheless, the Rupert Wyatt-directed movie becomes the third film this summer to take the highest spot in the chart for more than one week after "" and "".

Trailing behind "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" at number two was -starring drama "". The newcomer on the chart has raked $26 million. The movie earned around $5 million more than what analysts previously predicted, with around 73% of critics recommending the film.

Another new entry, "" landed at the third position with $18 million, which fell from prediction. The fifth installment of the thriller franchise was actually expected to earn not less than $23 million on its first weekend.

Raja Gosnell's animated movie "" dropped two positions from the second to the fourth this week. The film added $13.7 million to its domestic cume totaling $101.5 million after playing in theaters ten days. Meanwhile, another new entry "" rounded up the top five with $13.3 million, far from the expectations of Columbia Pictures.

*UPDATE (Aug. 16, 2011 - 01:02 AM GMT): When the final figures came out on Monday, August 15, it was revealed that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" secured the seventh position on the chart. Thus, it forced "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." to drop another spot each and land on the eight and ninth position respectively.
