'Super 8' Set to Conquer This Weekend's Box Office

With 12.2 million dollars in Friday Box Office income, the JJ Abrams-produced sci-fi is set to beat 'X-Men' and 'Hangover 2' for the throne.

AceShowbiz - JJ Abrams' new and mysterious movie "Super 8" is set to win the box office this weekend after its Friday, June 10 screening set the bars high. With $12.2 million in early box office, the period sci-fi is looking at around $35 million over the three-day course from 3,379 locations.

According to THR, 71|percent| of the audience was over the age of 25 and males made up 56|percent|. "Super 8" had actually raked in a million on Thursday sneaks in 335 theaters, which would make the total first week income around $36 million. Paramount had expected less than that but now the studio can cheer for it had spent $25 million in the marketing campaign only.

Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg had kept mum on the plot as well as other details about the movie before Thursday. But on the first day screening, they leaked a reel that explains what kind of creature that escaped the wrecked train. Part of this footage appeared in the movie.

Coming strong at number 2 is "X-Men: First Class" which has accumulated $100 million in two weeks. Meanwhile, "The Hangover Part II" has now grossed over $200 million after 16 days in theaters. The other new entry this week is Relativity's "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer" which sits at number 7 with $5.5 million.
