At a press conference just days before the new 'American Idol' is crowned, the 17-year-old finalist claims that neither he nor Lauren Alaina sees the finale as a competition anymore.

AceShowbiz - "American Idol" is just a couple days away from crowing its winner for season 10, but rather than stressing over his song choices, finalist Scotty McCreery has his mind on other little things. At a press conference on Monday afternoon, May 23, the singer from Garner, North Carolina admitted he is mulling over whether or not he should shave his head for the finale.

"This has been the biggest thing on my mind," the 17-year-old said. "Every time I look in the mirror I think, Should I? Should I not? I used to have short hair. That was me and the boys back home. We said, 'Short hair don't care.' I'm torn. If J.Lo cuts it, I might. How many chances do you get to have the most beautiful woman in the world cut your hair? I don't know. I might. Tune in to see. I still don't know."

Asked about having to compete against fellow teen finalist Lauren Alaina, the country crooner responded, "We're friends. This isn't a competition, we're just singing our hearts out. We're both going in full steam ahead." Lauren couldn't agree more. She chimed in, "I think whatever is meant to happen will happen. I think if Scotty wins, I'll be happy for him because he's one of my best friends."

On whether he is mentally preparing himself for the finale, Scotty opened up, "I'm just going to tell myself to stay calm." He added, "We played for 30,000 back in our hometowns, but there's like 8,000 in there [Nokia Live] and it's totally more intimidating. It's more intimate. It's in one room. It's a whole new ballgame for for us and we just have to keep ourselves clam and not get too riled up."

Scotty also talked about not letting all the attention go to his head. "It's tough for us because we're both from small towns and nowhere around L.A.," he confessed. "This is all new for us. We just try to stay true to ourselves and stay in our boots. That's what I always tell myself. To stay grounded and just take it one day at a time. We'll see where it leads us."

Looking pass the finale, the relief pitcher for his high school team shared, "We're both country. I'm going to go in there and try to make a country record. That's what I love. That's what I've grown up with, and if that crosses over, great. But if not, country is what I want to focus on. Country music is hip. Country fans are loyal. They've gotten us here so we owe all of this to them."

During the chat, Scotty's competitor Lauren was also quizzed on how she hurt her big toe. She jokingly rolled her eyes and explained, "There was this cute guy and I wasn't paying attention and I was waving and I didn't see this concrete step and I face planted into the concrete and skinned the top of my toe completely. That's my story. Period."

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina will battle it out for the "American Idol" title on Tuesday, May 24. The winner will be announced the next day on Wednesday, May 25.
