Cruise would portray a surface drone repairman in the Joseph Kosinski-directed film and is 'talking' to star in Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'.

AceShowbiz - Tom Cruise signs up for a mission in the future through "Oblivion". In the sci-fi film, Cruise will be directed by "Tron Legacy" helmer Joseph Kosinski who came up with the story and developed it into a graphic novel with writer Arvid Nelson and illustrator Andree Wallin.
The pic is "set in a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition and the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak (Cruise) discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows."
Kosinski said he envisioned the movie as "a very spare science fiction film with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes." The PG-13 project would start shooting in October with $100 million budget from Universal. The graphic novel will be released later this year as precursor of the movie.
"Oblivion" is not the only big project Cruise is eying. He reportedly is in talks to appear in Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" which has nabbed Charlie Hunnam and would only start the production late this year.
