Universal Releases New Trailer for Vince Vaughn's 'The Dilemma', Omits Gay Joke

Since GLAAD calls the use of the 'gay' word in the scene 'slur', the studio agrees to replace it because the teaser trailer 'was not intended to cause anyone discomfort.'

AceShowbiz - Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for "The Dilemma" in response to GLAAD's request to cut the gay joke from the teaser trailer. Not only removing the scene which contains the word "gay", the studio also shares a lot of fresh footage in the full trailer including a scene which sees Vince Vaughn confronting Winona Ryder about her infidelity.

The word "gay" was easily noticed since it appeared at the very beginning of the first trailer. In the scene, Vaughn's character uses it as a reference to "electric cars" during a meeting with some execs. "Electric cars are gay. I mean, not 'homosexual' gay but 'my parents are chaperoning the dance' gay," he says.

GLAAD reacted to the joke, calling it "offensive" and asking Universal to remove it from the trailer which was playing in theaters. "The use of the word 'gay' in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios in a statement.

Responding to GLAAD's critic, the studio released their own statement on Friday, October 8. "The teaser trailer for 'The Dilemma' was not intended to cause anyone discomfort. In light of growing claims that the introduction to the trailer is insensitive, it is being replaced. A full trailer, which has been in the works for some time, will post online later today," Universal said.

"The Dilemma" itself is a comedy following Vince Vaughn's Ronny who is put in difficult situation as he has to decide whether or not he will tell his best friend, Kevin James' Nick, the truth after he caught his wife cheating with another man. Winona Ryder stars as Nick's wife Geneva, while Jennifer Connelly joins the cast as Ronny's girlfriend Beth.

Ron Howard serves behind the lens for this movie, which will entertain moviegoers in the U.S. starting January 14, 2011.
