AceShowbiz - "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" is a new champion at North American Box Office. The highly-anticipated movie rakes in $69 million on its first weekend, knocking out "Toy Story 3" which had sat on the position for two straight weeks.
Since it was debuted on June 30, "Eclipse" has grossed $161 million as of Sunday, July 4. The number, however, is lower than the $165 million made by "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" over its first five days in November 2009.
Regarding this, Summit Entertainment claims "the Saturday forecast was simply a rough estimate, and it was not too concerned about 'Eclipse' getting off to a slower start than 'New Moon'," The Hollywood Reporter reports. Richie Fay, the studio's president of domestic theatrical distribution, even predicts strong midweek sales, saying "I think it has a ways to go before we can say it's falling short."
On number two of the chart, there is "The Last Airbender". Despite the poor review, the M. Night Shyamalan-directed action sci-fi which is released in 3-D manages to pull in $40.5 million over the three-day weekend period. Previous champion "Toy Story 3" drops two places to the third with an additional $30.2 million cume.
"Grown Ups" follows on the fourth spot with $19.1 million gross, dropping about 52.8|percent| from its opening weekend revenue. Meanwhile, "Knight & Day" which is deemed the least successful movie starring Tom Cruise adds $10.4 million to its domestic gross, making it land on the fifth place.
