'Shrek Forever After' Leads Box Office With Unimpressive Opening Bow

Though this fourth 'Shrek' film manages to push aside 'Iron Man 2' from the first place, it does not earn as much as the predecessor did on the debut weekend.

Shrek's new adventure has led its way to North American Box Office. Based on studios' estimation, "" tops the chart with $70.8 million on its debut weekend. Despite becoming a champ, the film does not perform as great as it is expected.

The latest installment of the DreamWorks' animation franchise gains far less than 2007's "" which earned $121.6 million on its opening weekend. "This was on the low end for a 'Shrek' film," DreamWorks worldwide marketing chief Anne Globe admits. "But we're very optimistic that it's on its way to becoming a worldwide hit."

Meanwhile, "" falls to the second place after sitting on the top spot for two straight weeks. This -starring superhero film only rakes in $26.3 million from ticket sales or drops about 49.3% from last week's tally.

"" follows the "" sequel, sitting on the third place. After failing to show its roar during its debut weekend, this epic adventure movie continues its underperformance by dropping about 48% in ticket sales. Thus, the film only adds $18.8 million to its domestic gross.

The fourth place belongs to "" which pulls in $9 million, making a current cumulative tally of $27.3 million. Rounding up the top five is "" which only earns $4.3 million on its second weekend.
