The writers of "" is toying with the story of Elena and Damon's romance. The first evidence of their chemistry is released in the form of a new still which is taken from the April 22 episode called "Miss Mystic Falls". The picture which is provided by EW sees Elena and Damon partnering up in a traditional dance.

At the Founder's Day Gala, Elena and Caroline compete for the title of 'Miss Mystic Falls' against other girls from town, including Tina Fell and Amber Bradley. Elena is happy to have Bonnie back in town, but Bonnie still has issues to work through. John Gilbert attempts to intimidate Damon, but his plan doesn't have the desired effect. Damon discovers that Stefan is hiding a dangerous secret that could impact everyone in town.

Executive producer Julie Plec had previously talked to E! Online about this romance between Elena and Damon, saying Katherine is the fuse that started it. "He's pretty much drunk for a couple episodes," Plec said about Damon. "Then he starts to realize that he may not have Katherine, but there's Elena kind of in the picture and watching him look at her in a different way, not under the lens of 'she looks like the woman I love,' but 'the woman I love doesn't give a crap about me and here's this girl that I'm building this friendship with'."

However, this pair may not be long-lasting. "They go through some ups and downs. He's done some nasty stuff that she finds out coming up. She finds out something that he did that is not forgivable in any way, and it really puts a divide between them," Plec revealed.
