AceShowbiz - For weeks, there were wide rumors about who will land the coveted role of Captain America in "The First Avenger: Captain America". Now, finally there are talks about who will portray his nemesis in the upcoming film and Hugo Weaving comes out as the possible depicter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is determined to get Weaving starring as Red Skull, but the deal has not been sealed yet. The villainous character first appeared in the comics in 1941 when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler's right-hand man. Red Skull was also the villain in 1990 "Captain America" movie.

Weaving is well known as Agent Smith in "Matrix" trilogy and has also appeared as Elrond in "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Most recently, he stars in "The Wolfman", which has been dropped in the U.S. in February this year, as Detective Aberline.

"The First Avenger: Captain America" itself still has no lead actor attached to the project. As of late, it was reported that Chris Evans is added on the list of the candidates to be the superhero, competing with Garrett Hedlund and Mike Vogel.

Joe Johnston is slated to direct this project which will pick up the story of Steve Rogers who is turned into Captain America after joining a top secret research project. Paramount Pictures has set July 22, 2011 as the day when this movie will hit U.S. theaters.
