Two of the girls generally impressed the judges with their signature voices while two guys came out annoying Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi.

AceShowbiz - On Tuesday, January 12 "American Idol" officially kicked off the ninth season with the Boston audition. Like previous years, there were those who triumph with their pure talent and there were those who make Simon Cowell rolls his eyes. This time is no different with the presence of Maddy Curtis and Andrew Fenlon.

Maddy is a 16-year-old who is the ninth of 12 children. Her older brother has Down Syndrome and her parents adopted two more babies with the same disability. She sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" which brought Jason Castro to spotlight in season 7. Simon was very clear about Mandy not annoying and having a beautiful voice. She got through with four yeses.

While Maddy lightened up the room, Andrew Fenlon brought it down. The guy was complaining of waiting for hours to audition and when he entered the judging room, it was written all over his face. Singing "House of the Rising Sun", Andrew pissed Kara DioGuardi for not being able to wait hours while other people would wait for years.

And then there was Pat Ford who challenged Simon to be ready for him. Ford is 17-year-old who sang and choreographed Britney Spears' "Womanizer". With all the moves and mediocre vocal, Pat did not go to Hollywood but Kara said she loved his personality and hugged him.

Most of those who went through in the next few auditions were women, including the last act. Leah Laurenti closed the day in a high note by singing her jazzy version of "Blue Skies". Randy Jackson said she was the best he has heard so far.

31 contestants advanced to the next round in Boston and more from Atlanta will be revealed on the Wednesday, January 13 episode. Mary J. Blige replaces Boston's guest judge Victoria Adams.
