James Cameron Has Mapped Out 'Avatar' Sequels

Though the director has planned the storyline for two follow-ups, he notes the future of the sequels will depend on people's reception to 'Avatar'.

AceShowbiz - Since few months ago, there have been talks that there will be follow-ups to not-yet-released "Avatar". On Friday, December 11, when attending a press conference for the film in London, England, James Cameron has once again expressed his belief that the sci-fi movie could see, at least, two sequels and he has planned the storyline.

"I have it mapped out, but I haven't written the scripts yet," the helmer stated. He, however, noted, "And it all depends on whether we do well with the first film. But that was certainly the intention from the beginning - to create a foundation for a persistent world."

Furthermore, Cameron admitted he has been thinking about making "Avatar" as the beginning of a franchise since it started to be developed. "Actually, when I pitched this to 20th Century Fox four-and-a-half years ago, I said, 'You know, we're going to spend a lot of money and time and energy creating not only a process but the assets...' So it really makes sense to think of it as the potential start of a franchise, if you will, or a saga that plays out over several acts, each movie being an act of that saga," the 55-year-old shared.

James Cameron first conceived "Avatar" 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision had not yet existed. The story revolves around Jake Sully, a former Marine who was paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Unwittingly embarking on a journey of redemption and discovery, he will later lead a heroic battle to save a civilization. This action thriller will hit theaters in the U.S. on December 18.
