'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' to Get New Writers

November 23, 2009 (9:13 am) GMT
Writers of 'Conan' reboot Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer will likely team up once again for a movie adaptation of a video game since the original scribe, Kyle Ward, has left the project.

When it was announced in June that Columbia Pictures was developing "", a movie based on Sony's hit video game, the studio tapped Kyle Ward to write the script. However, Latino Review recently learned that the scribe has dropped out of the movie project and the studio has approached other potential writers.

Being in talks to fill Ward's abandoned position are Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The duo, who wrote the upcoming "Conan" reboot, will likely team up once again to pen the script for the action-adventure movie as the negotiations are underway and they are reportedly close to seal a deal.

Regarding the reason why Ward left "Uncharted" at the last minute, it has been reported that Ward was contractually obliged to deliver drafts for his other movie projects, particularly "". Meanwhile, Sony did not want to wait around for a draft because they and producer Avi Arad have put the upcoming film as their high priority project.

"Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" will revolve around fortune hunter Nathan Drake, who is a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake. Believing he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue, he embarks on a journey to find it. The search becomes competitive and dangerous when a rival hunter joins the fray and mutated creatures begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets.

Beside Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad, and Alex Gartner will also serve as the project's producers. No director has been appointed just yet nor have any names in relation to the position been thrown in. Words on possible lead actor have not been disclosed as well. However, Columbia Pictures has eyed a 2012 release schedule for the movie.
