'I Can Do Bad' Leads North American Box Office

Being the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie, 'I Can Do Bad All by Myself' scores the filmmaker his second #1 movie of the year after 'Madea Goes to Jail'.

AceShowbiz - North American box office has a new champion on the September 11 to 13 weekend as "I Can Do Bad All by Myself" came triumphant over two-time #1 seater "The Final Destination". Debuted atop the chart in its opening week, the Tyler Perry latest comedy has hauled in $23.4 million out of approximately 3,200 screens at 2,255 sites.

The movie's debut at #1 marked the seventh consecutive low-cost movie by Perry for Lions Gate Entertainment that has opened successfully since early 2006. It also became Perry's second movie this year to land atop the box office following the February-released "Madea Goes to Jail". "I Can Do Bad" was the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie as well.

"Tyler Perry has a special way of speaking to his audience, and it's unbelievable," Lionsgate's executive vice president and general sales manager David Spitz commented on Perry's part in securing the box office's top slot. "He always knows what his audience wants, and I never underestimate him." While praising Perry, the studio topper also credited on Madea character's appearance and the cast ensemble, which includes Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight, for the success of the film.

Chiming in similar response was box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com. "Eight theatrical films, five No. 1 debuts - Lionsgate has a perpetually successful franchise in Tyler Perry," he stated. "He is the brand. He's a very rare example of a director-writer-actor who is completely synonymous with his work and with the success of his movies."

Another newcomer doing good in its opening weekend was "9". The Shane Acker-directed animation pulled in $10.7 million over the three days weekend and thus, secured the second slot at the chart. Opened on Wednesday, September 9, the movie featuring the voice of Elijah Wood got an early start on the competition, and so far has collected $15.2 million in total.

Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" slipped to the third position after several weeks staying strong on the second place. Facing a 47.2|percent| decline in sales, the World War II epic starring Brad Pitt grabbed $6.1 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. The latest weekend bow brought its earning tally to $103.9 million.

Fourth place belonged to "All About Steve". The Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper-toplined comedy raked in $5.6 million more to the total of $21.7 million after two weeks of screenings. Rounding up the top five was the last two weeks champ "The Final Destination" with $5.5 million in its pocket.
