'Bruno' Dethrones 'Transformers 2' From North American Box Office's Top
Movie

Beating the opening weekend of 'Borat', this Sacha Baron Cohen's latest mockumentary manages to take the top of the box office and denies 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' of its third win.

AceShowbiz - "Bruno" has strutted its way to the top spot of the North American box office over the weekend. Debuted Friday, July 10, at approximately 3,400 screens at 2,756 venues, the Sacha Baron Cohen-starring mockumentary scored $30.6 million and managed to steal the #1 position from "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", which has dominated the revenue chart for the past two weeks.

Number-wise, the Dan Mazer-directed comedy beat out the $26 million opening weekend of Cohen's previous comedy, "Borat". However, it didn't make quite an impression like "Borat" which managed to rake in $26.5 million at only 837 theaters. "Bruno" started big on its opening day with $14.4 million, but had a huge drop of 39|percent| on Saturday, July 11.

"It is unusual for a film to drop on Saturday. Normally, you expect the film at least to be even on Saturday or above compared to Friday, because Saturday is the biggest moviegoing day of the weekend," Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, commented on the movie's performance. "It's going to be interesting to see how it does over the long run."

"Bruno" aside, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" stayed solid at the second position. Dropping only 33.8|percent| from last weekend, the animation comedy hauled in $27.6 million. With the impressive number, the third of the "Ice Age" series has raised a domestic total of $119.7 million over its ten days in theaters.

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", however, slid down to the third spot. After winning a neck-in-neck battle with "Dawn of the Dinosaurs" last weekend, the sequel to 2007's blockbuster "Transformers" faced a 42.8|percent| drop in sales, making it to take in $24.2 million to add to the total tally of $339.2 million.

Fourth place went to Michael Mann's "Public Enemies". The Johnny Depp and Christian Bale-starring crime drama pulled in $13.8 million over the weekend. Meanwhile, "The Proposal" rounded up the top five with $10.6 million, and newcomer "I Love You, Beth Cooper" settled for seventh with $4.9 million.
