Though having yet another tight run for the top of North American box office against 'Up', the Todd Phillips' comedy manages to secure the #1 slot for its second consecutive weekend.

AceShowbiz - "The Hangover" clung onto its #1 spot at the North American box office for a second weekend. While it faced a stiff competition from Disney/Pixar's "Up", the raunchy comedy from director Todd Phillips secured the top position by hauling in an estimated $33.4 million over the three days weekend starting from June 12.

By doing so, this movie became the first film of this summer to hold onto the box office's top slot for two consecutive weeks and its added bow also brought it to be the seventh film of summer to cross the $100 million mark. Grossing around $105.4 million after only 10 days in theaters, this movie has also set a new record for an R-rated movie. It became the fastest R-rated film to overcome the milestone, beating out the old record "Sex and the City" which needed 11 days to reach $100 million.

Expected to cross the $200 million mark in the coming weeks, the movie has been dubbed to be summer's unlikeliest date flick with 48|percent| of the audience being female. Of the shifting of target audience, Warner Bros.' Jeff Goldstein said, "To be perfectly honest, we thought this would be a movie for guys. But I think women are looking more at the premise, which is really funny. And people like to laugh on dates."

Sitting comfortably behind "The Hangover" was "Up". The animated adventure collected a little bit less than the comedy movie with approximately $30.5 million in its pocket. On the track to outshine Pixar's previous movie "Wall-E", this animation has seen a total gross of about $187.2 million after 17 days screened in the big screen across North America.

The remake of the 1974 subway-hijacking thriller, "The Taking of Pelham 123", debuted third on the revenue chart. In line with expectations, the movie that pairs up Denzel Washington and John Travolta earned an estimated $25 million during its first weekend. "It's a solid opening for us," commented Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at the Sony Corp unit.

The fourth place went to "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian". Holding itself steady on the fourth spot since last week, the Ben Stiller's comedy brought in around $9.6 million to the total of about $143.4 million. "Land of the Lost" slipped to fifth with $9.2 million, while Eddie Murphy's "Imagine That" opened to an upsetting result, placed sixth and earning merely about $5.7 million.
