Stephen Sommers Reportedly Fired From 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra'
Movie

The director behind big screen adaptation, 'G.I. Joe', has been relieved of his duty after a test screening for the film gave the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount.

AceShowbiz - Words on the street are, director Stephen Sommers has been fired from "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra". Posting a message on Don Murphy's message boards and chronicling what really happened before, during and after the production of the movie, forum poster Endtimes claimed that the filmmaker has been cut off from the project following a low test screening score.

"So the story goes like this-," Endtimes began explaining. "After a test screening wherein the film tested the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount, the executive who pushed for the movie Brad Weston had Stephen Sommers, the super hack director of the film fired. Removed. Locked out of the editing room."

He furthermore revealed that film editor Stuart Baird was brought in while producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was also shunt out from the project. "Stuart Baird, a renowned 'fixer' editor was brought it to try to see if it could be made releasable," Endtimes wrote. "Meanwhile producer Lorenzo whose turkey IMAGINE THAT explodes this weekend as the new bomb in theatres (also championed by Weston) was told his services were no longer needed on the film either."

As for Sommers, it was reported that he was forced to pretend that he was working on "Tarzan" over at Warner Bros., before then summoned back to the editing room "when word of the firing started to be whispered about in Hollywood". His return allegedly serves only "to save appearances" since "Baird is still editing the movie with studio input."

"G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" is based on the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy franchise. Set ten years in the future and chronicling the rise of the Cobra Organization, it revolves around Duke and Ripcord's introduction to the elite G.I. Joe team, and follows the team from the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps as they fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the Cobra in plunging the world into chaos. Featuring Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller among others, it is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on August 7.
