'The Hangover' Beaten Down by 'Up' at the Box Office

June 8, 2009 (2:13 am) GMT
Though giving a strong competition for the top of North American box office over the weekend, 'The Hangover' should be satisfied with a runner-up position as 'Up' closes the weekend atop the chart.

Though it managed to steal the #1 slot at the North American box office on Friday, June 5, "" should settle for a runner-up position following the weekend tally. Taking in an estimated $43.3 million, the raunchy comedy came in a close second to this week's champion, Disney/Pixar's "".

"The Hangover" exceeded expectation and scored much greater sales than 2005's -starring "" even when adjusted for ticket price inflation. "We were positioned to be a solid No. 3," Warner distribution president Dan Fellman responded to the impressive opening weekend. "The wonderful results clearly put us in an interesting place."

With "The Hangover" falling short to capture the box office's top, "Up" became the first movie to retain the #1 spot for two straight weekends. Though experiencing a 35% decline in sales, the animation movie about a grumpy 78-year-old man, an inquisitive 8-year-old adventurer and a floating house, has proven to be the one movie to beat as it pulled in a higher number than what movie analysts predicted earlier that it would bring in less than $40 million.

While "The Hangover" and "Up" smashed the top two box office, "" failed to impress. The -starring comedy opened third on the chart, grossing a distant estimation of about $19.5 million over the three-day weekend. Its weekend bow was lower than the similar genre "" as well as Ferrell's last TV adaptation, "".

The fourth place went to "". Slipping down two spots, the 's comedy saw a 39.8% drop in ticket sales over the weekend and hauled in approximately $14.7 million. So far, it has grossed around $127.3 million in total. "" rounded up the top five with an estimated $8.4 million.
