'Venom' Is Indeed in the Works
Movie

Sony Pictures are pushing ahead the 'Spider-Man' spin-off, 'Venom', by hiring 'Zombieland' writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to pen the screenplay.

AceShowbiz - "Spider-Man" will indeed get a spin-off treatment as Sony Pictures have been claimed to officially give the 'go-ahead' nod for "Venom". Sci Fi Wire broke the news, reporting that the studio have picked up "Zombieland" writing team, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, to write the script for the movie focusing on the evil Spider-Man look-alike.

The two writers were already working on the script, but denied to give out any details on the possible plot. "We're under strict orders on Venom," Wernick said, as quoted by the site. "We can't talk about it. It's just super secret." While happy to take the job, Reese added that he is terrified, reasoning "It's source material that everybody knows and everybody's familiar with and everybody loves. There's a burden on you to meet the expectations of people. A lot of people are curious about Venom."

Still, Reese furthermore revealed that he and Wernick had done some research for it. "We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts," he explained. "We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job."

Back in 2006, one of Spider-Man's enemies, Venom, was introduced to the fans in "Spider-Man 3" as Topher Grace portrayed the evil Spider-Man look-alike, humanly known as Eddie Brock. In early 2008, IESB had come out with the story that the villainous character may get its own screen time as the studio owning the rights to the character were reportedly in talks with several "A list writers" to make the spin-off film.

Considered one of the greatest threats to humanity in the Spider-Man universe, Venom a.k.a. the Venom Symbiote is a sentient alien with a liquid-like form which requires a human host to survive. By bonding itself to the host, it gives its host enhanced power to form a super-villain. Its first host was Spider-Man implementing evil thoughts to the hero. Following Spider-Man's rejection, the alien finds other host and then becomes known as Venom.
