'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' Settled for Second Slot at Box Office

Debuting with 20.8 million dollars at the North American box office, 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' didn't manage to overthrow 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' which still holds the box office's top slot.

Vampire horror movie "" should be satisfied with a second place position at the North American box office. Though grossing $20.8 million on its opening weekend, the Patrick Tatopoulos-directed film was still unable to steal the top position from "".

"Rise of the Lycans" actually started the weekend strong. On Friday, January 23, it led the box office with $7.9 million in its pocket and overshadowed the $5.6 million bow of "Paul Blart". As the weekend ended, it was then unveiled that the "" prequel has become the weakest of the "Underworld" franchise as "" opened to $26.9 million and "Underworld" brought in $21.8 million in its first weekend.

While the vampire thriller starring , and settled for second, "Paul Blart" showed its dominance by securing the top spot for second weekend in a row. The ' comedy raked in $21.6 million to add to the total of $64.9 million for the 10-day of screenings.

Trailing behind those two movies were "" and "". "Gran Torino", the action drama directed and starred by , slipped to third position with $16.2 million, while family comedy "Hotel for Dogs" climbed up one slot to the fourth place, adding $12.9 million to its cume of $37.5 million.

Oscar contender and winner of the 15th Screen Actors Guild Awards, "" has shot up five spots at the box office, landing itself on the top five. Seeing an 82.9% boost in ticket sales in its 11th week, the rag-to-riches tale collected $10.7 million for the total of $56.1 million and eventually is expected to surpass the $100 million mark.
