'American Idol' Recap: Second Day Audition in Kansas City, Missouri

January 15, 2009 (9:39 am) GMT
Not as eccentric as the first day, the second day audition of 'American Idol' season 8, gives a yes to several people with inspiring stories.

After much hype on the first day audition in Phoenix, Arizona, "" went mild in the second day, January 14. Held in previous season's champ 's hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, the audition produced a total number of 27 golden tickets but the segment lacked the 'oomph' that the first delivered with its bikini girl stunt and 's attempt to high five a blind contestant.

One of the hits that was considerably an extra gas for the episode would be the presence of last season's finalist , who was there in support of his pink-haired brother, Michael Castro. The younger Castro claimed that he only started singing 20 days before the audition. Simon called his rendition of 's "In Love With a Girl", "goodish" while Kara DioGuardi said that she likes him. He went through to the Hollywood round.

Bestfriends Jamar Rogers and Danny Gokey were lucky pairs who get the chance to make it to the next round together. Danny in particular, provided the sentimental value to the show, revealing that his wife had just died a few weeks earlier due to heart problems.

An audition involving cheerleaders that was 'almost', happened to Andrew Lang who sang "My Girl" but did terribly in his second chance. Randy Jackson overturned his decision to a no and he was sent home along with his two crying cheerleaders.

And one who did not escape Cowell's nasty remark would be Chelsea Marquardt. She started to sing and Simon said, "It sounded like a cat jumping off the Empire State Building and the sound it would make before it hit the floor."

The last one trying her luck that day would be Memphis native Lil Rounds who had a sad story to share. Her family has been living in a motel since her house was hit by a tornado and she hoped for a better life through the competition. praised her as "one of the best" she has heard and the judges gave her unanimous 'yes'.

The third audition will air on January 20.
