Clay Aiken Blogs About Fans' Support Over His Gay Revelation
People magazine's latest cover story about Clay Aiken confirming he's gay has been on newsstands and people are quick to react, mostly in positive ways, prompting the singer to express his gratitude for their outpouring support. Thanking his fans for their supportive response, he wrote on his site's members-only message board that he's so proud of them all and feeling blessed to have them in his life.
Clay graced the cover of People magazine with his newborn son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline that read "Yes, I'm gay." The cover also quoted him as saying, "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things." The cover was leaked prior to its official release which was on Wednesday, September 24.
"It was the first decision I made as a father," Clay told People in an interview referring to his decision to officially confirm his sexual orientation, reasoning "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that." He went on saying, he hopes his fans "know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all. ... But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."
Hollywood famous figures, including Simon Cowell and Rosie O'Donnell, have offered some words of support for the singer. "Good for him. If he said it, it's the right thing for him. Good for him," Simon commented. As for Rosie, who's a lesbian, she simply said, "I love Clay. He is a beautiful man in every way."
Leaders of two prominent gay-rights groups, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Family Equality Council, also show some support for Clay. "We congratulate Clay for making this decision and for setting an example for others and his family," GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano said in a statement. Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality, commented "Much like Rosie O'Donnell, the announcement that Clay Aiken is gay reinforces a simple reality: The American public can no longer say it does not know a gay or lesbian parent."
Clay himself has admitted he's speechless by the outpouring support he has received. "We'll 'talk' more later, but, suffice it to say, for the first time in recent memory, I am speechless," he wrote on his site's members-only message board. "I'm so proud to know and love all of you...My family is so much larger than Parker, Jaymes, mom, Brett, etc.," the new father continued. "It extends to each of you. And I couldn't be more blessed."
