'Street Fighter' Movie Eliminates Ken and Ryu, Undergoes Costume Adjustment
What goes along with the term 'Street Fighter'? If that question is brought up in front of video game lovers, the common answers given maybe Ken and Ryu, the two main fighters in the popular fighting game series. However, one should not expect the two characters to appear in the new adaptation movie of the video games series, "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li".
Answering fans' burning question whether the two martial artists are going to have parts in the film, producer Patrick Aiello brought in a considerably bad news. He stated that because the action film will be focused on Chun-Li and the video games contains tons of characters, there are no other choice but to cut off both Ken and Ryu's characters from the tidbit.
"Justin [Marks], Ashok [Amritraj] and Capcom got together and decided to make it more of an origin story for Chun Li. There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film," explained Aiello in the official Street Fighter Movie blog. "We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves. So, in short, Ken and Ryu will not be appearing in this film. But, that doesn't mean we wont see our red and white-clad heroes in potential sequels..."
In the official blog, the costume design of the characters is also being discussed and from the comment given, it is apparent that most of the characters won't be having their traditional costumes that have become the trademarks for each character. Still, the blog owner Aaron Horwitz insisted that Chun-Li will have her 'ox-horns' hairstyle in it.
"...it'd be silly to put Neal McDonough's Bison in a bright red suit and captain's hat with a pair of humongous shoulder pads. It works great in the video game, but in real life, it just wouldn't look intimidating. The same can be said for Balrog. He's an enforcer. A killer. A take-no-shit brawler to the core. And so, how scary would he be on screen if he beat people up with boxing gloves and a pair of blue short-shorts? All that said, do not worry...At some point, Chun Li will sport her trademark buns (the ones in her HAIR!) and of course, Vega's still got the mask and claw, for starters," wrote Horwitz in the blog.
"The Legend of Chun-Li" is directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and features the likes of Kristin Kreuk, Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris Klein, Rick Yune, Moon Bloodgood and Black Eyed Peas' Taboo among many others. The 20th Century Fox's film is set for February 27, 2009.
