The romantic comedy movie about four New York women dealing with their life and sex has beaten out 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' at the box office this weekend with $55 million.

AceShowbiz - The HBO television series adaptation movie "Sex and the City" created a box office stunner following its theatrical debut on May 30. Exceeding everyone's expectation and proving its fans loyalty, the romantic comedy movie posed a strong opening weekend by landing at the top seat on the revenue chart and adding its name to the history of best selling movies.
Screened in about 3,285 theaters nationwide, the movie about the four New York gal pals starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon pulled in $56.8 million over the three-days weekend. With the sales estimation, it surprisingly succeeded in coming in front of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" which slipped to the runner-up position with $44.8 million after experiencing a decrease of 55.3|percent| in sales. Not only it managed to push "Indiana Jones 4" to the second place, "SATC" also topped "Indy" first day earning of $25 million with a staggering $26.1 million ticket sales on Friday, May 30, only.
The impressive revenue garnered by "SATC" makes it to be the highest grossing R-rated comedy opening of all time. It beats out the previous record holder, the 1999's "American Pie" which was opened with $45.1 million. It also stands on the fifth place behind "The Matrix Reloaded", "The Passion of The Christ", "300" and "Hannibal" if observed from all R-rated movie. Additionally, the record "SATC" is making doesn't stop there as it breaks the biggest opening record for a live-adaptation of a television series overshadowing "Mission: Impossible" which earned $45 million previously.
Putting "SATC" aside from box office discussion, the substantial success of "Indiana Jones" should still be highlighted. Though the Steven Spielberg tidbit has been kicked out from the top spot, it still rakes in golds from theaters across the country resolving it to gross in total of $215.6 million. The fourth installment of the action adventure movie about the daring archaeological professor trying to return the Crystal Skull of Akator back to where it belongs becomes the second movie of 2008 to surpass the $200 million revenue following "Iron Man".
Coming in on the third spot is another newcomer "The Strangers". The horror thriller movie starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman also gives a better-than-expected result by grossing nearly $21 million dollar. Furthermore, the fourth and fifth slots go to former box office toppers "Iron Man" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian". "Iron Man" adds up another $13.5 million to the cume of $276.2 million over the course of five weekends it is screened, whereas "Prince Caspian" brings in an additional $12.7 million on its third weekend and thus earns in total of $115.4 million.
