Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday, May 13 for shooting a female acquaintance outside an N.Y.C. nightclub way back in July 2007.

AceShowbiz - Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday, May 13 for shooting a female acquaintance outside an N.Y.C. nightclub. The sentence stemmed from a July 14, 2007 incident during which Ma fired a shot toward a childhood acquaintance, identified as Makeda Barnes Joseph, outside of a nightclub in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood upon suspected that she had stolen $3,000 from her purse.

Was convicted of assault, illegal weapon possession and attempted coercion, Ma initially faced a maximum 25 years in prison. Being sentenced to eight years behind bars, she begged the judge for leniency for the sake of "my little boy," blamed her difficult childhood which forced her to grow up "surrounded by failure, violence and poverty," but "made something out of nothing" from her life, for the shooting.

State Supreme Court Justice Rena Uviller turned down her demand, due to the fact that the victim Makeda had nearly died and will never be the same physically, branded Ma "a young woman whose anger is out of control."

After the sentence was handed down, The Associated Press reported that Ma's fiance Papoose screamed, "All you want is money!" in the hallway outside the courtroom, apparently addressing Makeda, who was in the courtroom for the sentencing, but was not in the hallway when Papoose began shouting. As he was escorted out of the courthouse by court officers, still according to the AP, Papoose reportedly added, "Lock me up! Lock me up!"

Ma and Papoose initially planned to exchange wedding vows last weekend at the Rikers Island jail, where Ma has been incarcerated. The wedding, sad to say, was called off after Papoose showed up with a handcuff key, which was suspected about to be used to break Ma out of jail. The key has since been confiscated by guards.

Ma's lawyer Ivan Fisher said Papoose did have a key but denied that it could be used to open handcuffs. The rapper hasn't been charged though. Fisher, furthermore, added that Ma and Papoose somehow are still planning to wed.
