'Iron Man' Sky-Rocketing Through Box Office Massive Hit
Movie

Predicted to do fairly great at the box office, 'Iron Man' exceeded critics expectation by delivering a huge pile of gold in its opening weekend and getting its name in box office history.

AceShowbiz - Presenting moviegoers with the first highly anticipated film in the year of 2008, "Iron Man" proved to earn its rights of being the one which is suitable to mark the coming in of the summer blockbuster movies. By the end of the first May weekend on May 4, the Paramount Pictures' superhero flick has made its smashing debut claiming the top slot at the North American box office and exceeding critics expectation by hauling in an amazing $98.6 million for the three-day weekend tally and about $102.1 million in total since its early viewing on May 1.

Screened in over 4,000 theaters across the U.S., the Jon Favreau-directed action movie scribbled down its name in the box office history by being the second non-sequel movie with the highest grossing opening weekend coming in shortly behind another superhero tidbit "Spider-Man". It also scored in to be among the top ten movies to have its best three-day opening as well as the tenth feature film to debut with more than $100 million revenue. If being considered only from its superhero genre, "Iron Man" comes in fourth on the highest opening list after "Spider-Man 3" with $151.1 million, "Spider-Man" with $114.8 million and "X-Men: The Last Stand" with $102.8 million.

Being the first Marvel Studios-financed movie, the comic book adaptation film starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow gives much boost to the studio's confident in producing the other Marvel Comics adaptations. "It's a fantastic start to our new studio," confessed Marvel Studios' chairman David Maisel. "We're lucky to have this powerful Marvel brand that is loved, not just in comics. Like Pixar, it stands for something. It's quality family entertainment, and we have a fan base that spreads virally. Now, we have complete creative control." Previously, many Marvel adapted movies were brought to big screen by other movies companies.

The historic success of the movie about the genius billionaire creating a bullet-proved amour suit and saving the world with it puts other movies sitting on the top ten box office literally under the shadow. Making less than a quarter from "Iron Man" and opening second to the blockbuster hit is the romantic comedy "Made of Honor". The Columbia Pictures' film starring Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan pulled in $14.8 million. Additionally, last week champion "Baby Mama" has been pushed aside to the third place with the earning of $10.1 million, whereas Warner Bros. Pictures' adventure comedy "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" fell to the fourth slot with $6.1 million and closely followed by Universal Pictures' rom-com "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which also grossed nearly $6.1 million.
