The blackjack caper drama '21' has managed to stay atop the weekend box office, which ended on April 6, after outselling its supposed to be strongest competitor 'Leatherheads'.

AceShowbiz - The Columbia Pictures' blackjack drama "21" has proved its dominance at the North American box office as the Robert Luketic's film reigned over "Leatherheads" and "Nim's Island". At this weekend box office that ended Sunday, April 6, 2008, the film that features Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey has stayed atop by earning $15.3 million.

Despite facing a drop of about 36.4|percent| in ticket sales, the film about a group of MIT students who do the illegal card-counting act to win million in blackjack tables in Las Vegas has raked in total $46.7 million after 10-days of screening. Seeing the success garnered by the film so far, the movie co-produced by Spacey is reportedly expected to continue to do better at the box office.

The runner-up position went to the Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster-starrer film "Nim's" with $13 million. The family adventure comedy film pushed George Clooney's film "Leatherheads" which had briefly nailed the spot a day earlier. The Fox-Walden film managed to upset the football comedy film even more as "Leatherheads" didn't only fail to live up to Universal Pictures' expectation to take over the champion throne from "21" but also placed third at the box office. "Leatherheads" which features Clooney, Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski grossed a disappointing $12.7 million.

On the failure of "Leatherheads" to take over the top honor, Universal reasoned that the film has failed to connect with the younger audience. The head of distribution for Universal Nikki Rocco revealed that he believes some parents who might want to see the film may have to bring their kids to see "Nim's" or "Horton Hears a Who!". Further, he also expressed his regret stating, "I'm disappointed for us, I'm disappointed for George. I think he's a great guy and think he's got tons of directing talent. I wish I could have that crystal ball and tell you what went wrong."

Apart from those three films, other films that hit the top five box office were "Horton" in the fourth place and newcomer "The Ruins" in the fifth. "Horton", which slipped from its last week's runner up position, still continues to be the highest grossing film of the year. Bringing in another $9.1 million, the film has garnered the cume of $131.1 million in its fourth weekend of theatrical screening. Meanwhile, the horror thriller "Ruins" debuted in the fifth position after earning $8 million.

Following the top five films was spoof film "Superhero Movie" with about $5.4 million. Experiencing a 43|percent| decline in sales, the Craig Mazin's film starring Drake Bell and Sara Paxton fell three spots to the sixth place. Further, the seventh slot went to "Meet the Browns". The Tyler Perry's dramedy grossed in about $3.4 million on its third weekend.

The Judd Apatow-directed film "Drillbit Taylor" snagged the eighth slot by garnering in about $3.4 million. After three weeks showing, the Owen Wilson-starrer film got the total sales for about $25.5 million. Rounding up the last two places were the 20th Century Fox's horror thriller "Shutter" and Warner Bros. Pictures' epic drama "10,000 B.C.". The two different genre films brought in $2.83 million and $2.79 million respectively.
