AceShowbiz - The prehistoric epic "10,000 B.C." about a Mammoth hunter roaming to the end of the Earth to save his lover and his tribe from extinction has claimed the top spot on the North America weekend box office ended Sunday, March 9. The Roland Emmerich's drama adventure movie became the second Warner Bros' film following "300" to dominate the box office at the first weekend of March by grossing an estimated $35.7 million.
Despite its success of being the number one movie in North America, the Steven Strait and Camilla Belle-starring film was shy of the record-setting $70.9 million that "300" garnered in its debut weekend back in 2007 as well as of the $40 million or more prediction from some box office analysts'. The movie also came in behind other Emmerich's film "The Day After Tomorrow" which opened at $68.7 million in its first weekend in 2004.
Still, the tale of a hunter turned to ultimate warrior managed to also become film headlines overseas. According to Warner Bros' head of international distributor, Veronica Kwan-Rubinek, "10,000" opened at No. 1 in 19 of 20 territories where it is screened, among them were Spain, Mexico, Germany and Australia. It was reported that from those foreign markets, the epic drama brought home a total of $25.3 million, including $4.5 million from Spain and $3.8 million from Mexico.
This weekend box office chart saw another newcomer "College Road Trip" in the second place. The Walt Disney Pictures' family comedy starring Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symone pulled in a decent number of about $14 million in its opening weekend regardless of the bad reviews. Following in the third position was Dennis Quaid's drama thriller "Vantage Point" with $7.5 million.
Falling down three spots from its top position last week, Will Ferrell-starring comedy "Semi-Pro" took the fourth place. Posting an upsetting 60.9|percent| decline in sales, the New Line Cinema's movie earned only about $5.9 million in its second week. Further, the Lions Gate Films' heist thriller "The Bank Job" debuted on number 5 at the box office. The film that is inspired by the infamous 1971 Lloyds Bank's robbery in Marylebone, London pulled in a decent $5.7 million from 1,603 theaters.
Pushing aside "Step Up 2 the Streets" from the film's last week position, Paramount Pictures' drama fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles" stepped in the sixth slot with $4.8 million while garnering the cume of $61.7 million in its fourth week. The next spot went to Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson-starrer romantic drama "The Other Boleyn Girl" that grossed an estimated $4 million.
Hayden Christensen's sci-fi adventure "Jumper" continued its constant slips on the box office. This week, the 20th Century Fox's film experienced a 50.1|percent| sales drop. Hence, it came up only with $3.8 million on the fourth weekend. Dancing drama "Step Up 2" dropped to the ninth place bringing in about $3 million, while gold seekers' film "Fool's Gold" landed the last place of the top ten box office this week by grossing about $2.8 million.
