Opening in 3,121 theaters on Friday, February 29, the Will Ferrell-starring comedy has landed the top place at the North America weekend box office.

AceShowbiz - The Will Ferrell-starrer comedy film "Semi-Pro" shot to the top of North America weekend box office pushing last week's champion "Vantage Point" aside. The New Line Cinema's movie with a tone of sport comedy led the pack earning $15.1 million over the three days weekend ending on March 2, 2008.
Despite its success of nailing the top spot, the Kent Alterman-directed film is said to be on the track of being Ferrell's worst performing movies as its debut opening on Friday, February 29 showed a weak sales grossing only about $5.45 million. On the matter, the president of the box-office tracker Media By Numbers LLC, Paul Dergarabedian commented, "Will Ferrell is always a draw and audiences love him. But this particular weekend is not quite as strong as his earlier efforts."
Screened in 3,121 theaters and expected to open above $20 million for the weekend, the film didn't manage to exceed expectations. Even worse, the sales was proved to be far from Ferrell's two other sport comedies, "Blades of Glory" which pulled in $33 million and "Talladega Nights" with $47 million during the two film's first weekend.
Further, the runner-up position went to Columbia Pictures' drama thriller "Point" with $12.8 million. The film starring Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox has experienced a 44|percent| sales drop from last week. The next two spots saw a tight competition between a top ten box office film "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and a newcomer "The Other Boleyn Girl". "Chronicles" slipped to the third position with $8.7 million, while "Boleyn" shot to the fourth place luring in $8.2 million.
Following in the fifth slot was the 20th Century Fox's sci-fi adventure "Jumper" that managed to bring in $7.6 million on its third weekend and thus grossed in total $66.8 million. The dancing drama sequel film "Step Up 2 the Street" slipped to the sixth place posting an upsetting 40|percent| decline generating only $5.7 million. Additionally, on its fourth week screening, the Warner Bros' pic "Fool's Gold" spinning up $4.4 million.
The next position belongs to Academy Award-winning film "No Country for Old Men" which pulled in also about $4.1 million. Meanwhile, another newcomer drama comedy "Penelope" has stepped on the ninth position by gathering in $3.8 million. Rounding up the top ten box office was "Definitely, Maybe" with $3.4 million. Additionally, the acclaimed drama comedy "Juno" was out from the top ten race. Falling down three spots to the eleventh place, the Ellen Page-starring film earned $3.3 million, a bit less than the tenth placer.
