Landing 17 entries in BAFTA's long lists proved to be good for the postwar drama film as in the awards nominations announcement made on Wednesday, January 16, it received 14 nods.

AceShowbiz - Though often overshadowed by "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men" in many awards nominations, "Atonement" proved to be BAFTA's favorite film. In the announcement of 2008 BAFTA's film nominees on Wednesday, January 16, it was revealed that the postwar drama film gathered 14 nods from the prestigious British event leading over its two toughest contenders that got 9 nominations each.

The adaptation movie received film gongs for the categories of Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Music, Best Cinematography and many others. Further, under the categories for the best artist, it landed its stars, James McAvoy, Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan, a nod each for Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Aside from recognition for its actress, the Focus Features' film garnered Best Director nomination for its director Joe Wright.

Despite leading in the nominations with 14 counts, it doesn't mean that the road to huge victory for "Atonement" will be easy since the film has to be up against the dominating awards winners in many categories. For example, for the honor for Best Picture, "Atonement" will be in the run against "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood".

Additionally, its director has to compete with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck for "The Lives of Others", Joel Coen and Ethan Coen for "No Country for Old Men" and Paul Thomas Anderson for "There Will Be Blood", while its actor and actresses have to face awards' favorites Daniel Day-Lewis, Cate Blanchett, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page and Tilda Swinton.

The winners of 2008 BAFTA will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, on February 10. The gala event will be once again hosted by presenter Jonathan Ross. In the meantime, the complete list of the nominees can be seen at bafta.org.
