On Tuesday, January 15, the organizers of the 58th Berlinale announced that the documentary picture made by the Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is going to be the opening film and the veteran British rock band is expected to attend the screening.

On picking the film as the opening movie, the festival director Dieter Kosslick commented, "We are extremely excited to have the World Premiere of this magnificent film as our opening gala." Meanwhile, on the movie itself, Kosslick stated, "Martin Scorsese has captured the pure essence of an iconic band on the big screen."

"Shine", which is scheduled to be released in Germany in spring 2008, captures the raw energy of the one of the world's greatest rock 'n' roll bands in their two concerts at the Beacon Theatre, New York, on October 29, 2006 and November 1, 2006. The concert film that was shot using sixteen cameras features special guest performances from Jack White of The White Stripes, Christina Aguilera, and Buddy Guy. It also shows rarely-seen archival footage and current behind the scenes footage and interview. On the related news, Berlinale will end on February 17.
