Included in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section are "The Last Word", "Choke", "Downloading Nancy", and "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh", among others.

AceShowbiz - Selecting 121 big screen titles out of 3,624 feature film submissions, the Sundance Institute announced Wednesday, November 28, 2007 the list of movies in competition for its 30th annual Sundance Film Festival, set to run on January 17-27, 2008, in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah.

64 of those chosen are submitted into the U.S and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions with sixteen flicks in each of the four categories. All will encounter their world premieres at the upcoming event, most of them exploring individual ways of coping with a distressed world.

"The broad range of cinematic expression in this year's Festival is found not simply in terms of the volume of submissions or its demographics but in the variety of types of filmmakers and the issues they explore," festival director Geoffrey Gilmore remarked. "This year we are seeing a convergence of storytelling and art that truly illustrates the spectrum of what is possible in film."

For the U.S. Dramatic Competition, the Institute surprisingly inserts a lot of comedies into the slot, picking those like "The Last Word", a romantic comedy about a writer of suicide notes, and "Choke", which tells of a mother and son dealing with a "fear of aging, sexual addiction, and the dark side of historical theme parks." Titles such as "Downloading Nancy", "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh", "Phoebe in Wonderland", and "Sunshine Cleaning" are also submitted.

The U.S. Documentary Competition, in the meantime, consists of features telling various subjects ranging from music to environment. Included in the pack are "Slingshot Hip Hop", "American Teen", "Fields of Fuel", and "Flow: For Love of Water", which confronts the possibility that Earth's supply of this essential liquid is dwindling.

In World Cinema Dramatic Competition, selections represent seventeen countries that include Russia's "Mermaid", Israel's "Strangers", and Spain/Peru "Mancora." The World Cinema Documentary Competition, on the other hand, only features those from eight countries, focusing on the range of human experience as presented in U.K.'s "In Prison My Whole Life" or Jordan's "Recycle."

Complete pictures in competition for the festival are listed on the press release made by the Sundance Institute. Announcement of films in five out-of-competition sections is expected to be released Thursday, November 29, 2008.
