Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to the animated classic "Robotech" and would probably have Tobey Maguire plays the lead role.

AceShowbiz - Newlywed and father of one Tobey Maguire is about to switch his "Spider-Man" costume into that of "Robotech"

It has been reported that Warner Bros. Pictures and Maguire Entertainment, Tobey's production company, have acquired the film production rights for the "Robotech" military robot franchise from Harmony Gold USA with the actor is being considered to play the lead role.

After a lengthy negotiation, "We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Tobey commented in a statement. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

Craig Zahler has already been tapped to write the screenplay, with Tobey producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods.

"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series, "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross," "The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada," to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

However, "due to a copyright dispute that has Studio Nue and Big West, the creators and sponsor of Macross, facing against Harmony Gold's partner Tatsunoko Production, elements from Macross, the most popular of the three series, have not been used in recent and planned Robotech works onscreen" instead, the animenewsnetwork.com wrote.

Described as a science fiction animation project, the highly anticipated "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
