New Regency will back up Mark Gordon Company in adapting popular 1980s animated TV series "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" for the big screen.

AceShowbiz - Finally, the robot is going to be assembled properly from now on, many many thanks to New Regency Pictures.

That's right, the 20th Century Fox-based production company has struck a pact with the Mark Gordon Company to develop "Voltron" based on the popular 1980s Japanese animated TV series, comic books and toy line.

Taking great advantage from the massive box-office success of fellow robot movie "Transformers", project has been going through development since July 25 under the care of producer Mark Gordon with Justin Marks penning the script. Next plan for the flick following New Regency's inclusion reportedly is to develop it into a possible franchise.

As for the story, Marks' take tells about a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico during which five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together to pilot the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form a gigantic robot that helps battle Earth's invaders. Lawrence Inglee and Jordan Wynn are shepherding the film with Mark Costa and Ford Oelman serving as executive producers.
